Going…going… gone gray?

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

While AMAZING GRAYS come in all colors, I am interested in hearing from women who used to dye their hair and have since allowed their natural silver color to become their crowning glory. Letting ones hair go natural can be a tough decision, and we often get little or no support from others. As women, we can become advocates for one another. By creating the “Gallery of Silver Sages” my intention is to provide a means to connect with one another and begin a conversation about our fears, concerns, trials and tribulations about whether to continue to dye…or not.

For some, that’s not even on the radar screen, and that’s okay! Counting yourself amongst the community of Amazing Grays has more to do with a spirit of aging with grace, gusto and gratitude and less about the color of ones hair. However, there are those of us who have grown tired of dying our hair and are ready to step fully into our authencity.

If you are (or know of) a woman between the ages of 43-65 who has gone from colored to silver/gray, please tell her about this site. I would love to have an “after” digital headshot and a short 500 word story about her experience sent to maggierosecrane@gmail.com.

You can view some of the beautiful silver sages by clicking on the Gallery of Silver Sages link to your right.

See you there?

AGING WELL

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Not ready to be a feeble old woman with boobs in your lap, dreams on the shelf, and “Memory Lane” your only destination?

Me neither!

Welcome AMAZING GRAYS – women of a certain age (i.e. certain of who they are, what they want and what’s really important!) who are committed to aging well. Amazing Grays understand that WE are in charge of our experience of the aging process – not society, not the media, and certainly not our programming about what it means to “get old”.

My decision to live without hair dye brought me face-to-face with my underlying fears about getting and looking “old”. After challenging my limiting beliefs, riding the emotional roller-coaster AND reading mountains of research, I finally gave birth to my first book: AMAZING GRAYS – A Woman’s Guide to Making the Next 50 the BEST 50 (Regardless of your hair color!)

My message is not anti-aging… or anti-anything, because I’d rather not waste my time and energy being against something. I choose to be “for” aging mindfully and purposefully and maximizing the opportunities that lay before me.

My intention is to create a forum where we women of a “certain” age can share our experience, ideas and wisdom on issues related to aging well in a culture obsessed with youth and beauty. This might include:
changing body shapes, loss, gray hair, dyed hair, hot flashes, awakening slumbering dreams, self-hate, changing course, and the search for meaning, relevance and relationship in life after 50.

I eventually came to realize that hitting the Big 5-0 was not the end of my life, but an opportunity to create a fresh start. I propose we each design a life that reflects the amazing woman we’ve become, and stop trying to hang on to the past. Interested? I’d love to hear from you.
